Boxer on crappy food (toy dog used for size purposes)
Boxer on good food
Note the differences in texture and amount in the two piles above.
It is abundantly clear that what you are feeding your dog on a regular basis makes a huge impact on the amount of poop that is produced as well as how that dog looks, smells and feels. I can now look at a dog and/or it’s poop and tell you what it has been eating!
A 50lb, 3-6 year old dog on a high quality diet, will make 15-18 bombs per week and will measure in at ½ gallon of waste per week. That dog will also have a healthier, shinier, softer coat and smell neutral.
That same dog on a mediocre diet will poop 15-24 bombs per week, measure in at ¾-1 gallon of waste and will look, smell and feel doggie.
That same dog on a cheap, crappy food will poop 24-40 times or 1-1 ½ gallons each week, have a dry, itchy, dull and coarse coat, be vulnerable to infections, and stink so bad you don’t even want to pet them.
I have studied canine nutrition extensively, tested my own dogs on nearly every premium kibble produced, met with kibble producing executives and I have been tracking what my clients are feeding their dogs for many years.
Your dog is eating crappy food if any of the following ingredients are listed:
BHT or BHA or Ethoxyquin as a preservative
Articial color
Meat or poultry by-product (guts, beaks and feet? What animal?)
Animal digest
Corn/corn meal/corn gluten
Brewers rice
Propylene glycol--used to keep kibble chewy & moist
Sweeteners like corn syrup or sucrose
You’re feeding a crappy food if:
you can buy at a grocery store
it comes in fun colors or shapes
you’ve seen it advertised on TV
it's made by Purina
Hill’s Science Diet is a crappy food! I have heard too many times that “it’s recommended by my vet” that I just want to scream! Your vet is recommending it because he/she is making a HUGE profit off of every sale. Most vets do not have a clue about animal nutrition because this not a class taught in most vet schools. A friend of mine was told by her vet to feed her Shepard mix a Hill’s specialty food when her dog was allergic to 4 out of the top five ingredients and she was seeing him specifically about allergy issues! Hello?!?!
